The American Dental Association offers several recommendations to help individuals maintain strong teeth and a healthy mouth. This includes practicing an effective oral hygiene routine each day, as well as attending a dental checkup with a professionally trained dentist, every six months.

The first part of a checkup at North Forest Family Dental Care includes a professional dental cleaning and polishing treatment. Then Dr. Betzy Lara-Perdue will examine your mouth for any signs of gum disease, cavities, and other oral health problems.

If he finds signs of a problem he will help you understand the possible treatment options. Should he find a newly developing cavity, the treatment plan might call for repairing the tooth with a simple dental filling.

This mode of treatment calls for numbing the tooth before removing all signs of decayed tooth enamel. Then he will fill the prepared area with an alternate dental material. The tooth’s location and the dental fillings visibility in your smile will influence the type of material Dr. Betzy Lara-Perdue recommends for the dental filling.

Dental fillings created from metallic amalgam are durable, yet dark in color. This type of material is more common for repairing a cavity on a premolar or molar in the back of the mouth.

A composite dental filling is created from a special type of dental resin that can be color matched to the surrounding tooth enamel. This makes them a good choice for repairing a cavity that will appear in your smile.

If you live in the The Woodlands, Texas, area and you suspect a cavity has developed on one of your teeth, you should call 936-271-3338 to schedule a dental exam at North Forest Family Dental Care’s dental offices.
