By now, you are aware that you need to be proactive about keeping your teeth clean. You should see Dr. Betzy Lara-Perdue at North Forest Family Dental Care every six months for a cleaning and exam. During those visits, the dentist can remove any plaque you may have missed, and check for cavities and gum disease.

But in between those visits, you should keep up with your oral hygiene routine. Part of that is brushing at least twice day. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth, and brush away from your gumline. You should take two minutes to brush your teeth. Brush the fronts, then the backs and then the biting and chewing surfaces of your teeth. After that, brush your tongue, starting at the back and working your way to the front. Make sure you use a soft-bristled toothbrush that is in good condition.

You can floss before or after your brush. You will want to start with 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of it around each of your middle fingers, leaving yourself about two inches of floss. Curve the floss around each tooth, and floss upward, making sure to floss below your gumline. Use a fresh section of floss for each tooth.
